The Ambo Dance Theatre School

Technique & Style Dance Classes in Louisville

For dancers ready to specialize and deepen their training, the Ambo Dance Theatre School offers style-specific technique classes in Louisville for ages 4–19.

These classes introduce dancers to specific movement traditions such as ballet, modern, jazz, tap, and hip hop while helping them develop strength, musicality, and artistic voice.

Unlike many studios that focus primarily on choreography and building to the end-product performance, our dance classes in Louisville emphasize thoughtful dance education. Students learn not only how to perform movement, but also how to understand how movement works anatomically and how to develop their own creative voice.

Each class combines structured technique with creative exploration through choreography and composition training, allowing dancers to grow both physically and artistically in a supportive learning environment.

Students typically begin with Fundamentals of Dance, our foundational beginner class designed to expose dancers to many different dance forms. From there, students may choose to progress to technique classes in specific styles of their choosing, such as ballet, modern, jazz, hip hop, and tap.

Our Style-Specific Classes follow a 10-month academic calendar with an integrated curriculum and optional performance opportunities.

This pathway is ideal for families seeking:

  • consistency in training

  • a deep and focused approach to studying specific dance forms

  • long-term artistic development

Dance Styles Offered

Students in the Ambo Dance Theatre School’s Style-Specific Classes can explore a variety of movement traditions through our technique classes. Each style offers a different cultural and technical approach to rhythm, expression, and movement vocabulary.

Modern Dance

Modern dance explores expressive movement and storytelling through the body. Rooted in contemporary concert dance traditions, modern classes emphasize musicality, grounded movement, creative exploration, and improvisation.

Students develop strength, control, and expressive movement qualities while learning how choreography communicates ideas and emotions.

Jazz Dance

Jazz classes focus on energetic movement, rhythm, and style, drawing inspiration from the rich roots of African American vernacular dance and early jazz music traditions to create a fun environment for all! Students develop coordination and musicality while learning dynamic combinations that incorporate turns, leaps, and expressive movement.

Jazz dance is often fast-paced and engaging, helping dancers build both strength and performance confidence while reflecting on evolving trends influenced by its historical foundations.

Tap Dance

Tap dance focuses on rhythm and musicality through percussive footwork. Dancers learn how to create rhythms with their feet while developing coordination, timing, and musical awareness.

Tap classes encourage dancers to think of themselves as both movers and musicians.

Ballet

Ballet classes focus on posture, alignment, strength, and graceful movement while developing discipline and body awareness.

Students build strong technical foundations in classical ballet, while also connecting those movement practices to the historical and cultural traditions that produced them. This allows them to develop strength, control, and expressive movement qualities while learning how choreography communicates story and character.

Students learn how to safely execute skills such as balances, inversions, and weight-bearing movement while integrating them into fluid, connected choreography.

Acro classes emphasize proper progressions and alignment, helping dancers build confidence, coordination, and full-body awareness as they develop both technical skill and dynamic movement quality.
