What Is Partnering & Contact Improvisation?

This class combines two complementary movement practices: contact improvisation and nontraditional partnering.

Nontraditional Partnering is a contemporary approach to shared movement that emphasizes momentum, weight-sharing, and dynamic collaboration between dancers. It is both a gender neutral and body neutral form of partnering!

Contact Improvisation is incorporated as a training tool within this practice, helping dancers develop sensitivity to touch, timing, and shared movement pathways. This is a practice in and of itself, however in this class Contact Improvisation is used primarily as a supportive tool for nontraditional partnering work.

In our dance partnering and improvisation classes in Louisville, you’ll explore:

  • Creating movement spontaneously

  • Responding to other dancers in real time
  • Weight-sharing and counterbalance
  • Lifts and supported movement
  • Momentum-based partnering and off-center balance
  •  Using points of contact to initiate and guide movement
  • Transitioning fluidly in and out of shared weight and lifts

Together, these practices build both individual creativity and group connection.

What You’ll Learn in Class

Our dance partnering and contact improvisation classes in Louisville focus on building confidence, creativity, strength, and body awareness, and collaboration through structured exploration.

In class, you’ll develop:

  • Comfort creating movement in the moment

  • Awareness of space, timing, and group dynamics
  •  Skills for working with others through movement
  • Strategies for safe weight-sharing and lifts
  •  Techniques drawn from Nontraditional Partnering, including momentum-based lifts and shared weight pathways
  • Sensitivity to points of contact and kinetic energy exchange
  • Communication through touch and responsiveness
  • Confidence in your own movement choices

Each class typically includes:

  • Guided warm-ups and movement prompts

  •  Contact improvisation-based exercises to build responsiveness and physical listening

  • Partnering techniques and progressions

  • Structured Nontraditional Partnering combinations and movement phrases

  • Collaborative movement tasks and group exploration

Classes are approximately split between improvisational partnering exercises and structured partner work, allowing dancers to both explore and apply technique in a clear, progressive way.

You don’t need to come with a partner—everyone is encouraged to explore exercises with all people in the room.
