What Is Tap Dance?

Tap dance is a rhythmic movement practice where dancers create sound with their feet, turning movement into percussion. Tap dance developed in the United States through the blending of African rhythmic traditions and Irish step dancing in the 19th century.

Two major styles of tap dance exist:

  • Rhythm Tap, which focuses on musicality, improvisation, and complex rhythms

  • Broadway (or Theatrical) Tap, which blends rhythmic footwork with theatrical choreography, performance, and storytelling

In our tap dance classes in Louisville, students learn both the rhythmic foundations and expressive performance qualities that make tap such a dynamic dance style. You don’t just move to music—you become part of it.

Tap dance blends:

  • Rhythm and musical timing

  • Coordinated footwork and full-body movement

  • Listening and response to sound

  • Creative expression through improvisation

Because of this, tap is a great entry point for beginners while still offering depth and complexity for experienced dancers.
