The Ambo Dance Theatre School

Your First Class at Ambo Dance Theatre in Louisville

Thinking about trying adult dance classes in Louisville, but not sure what to expect?

You’re not alone. Most people who walk into their first class at Ambo feel a mix of curiosity and uncertainty.

Our goal is to make that first step feel clear, welcoming, and manageable—so you can focus on moving, not worrying.

You’re in the Right Place If…

You’ve been thinking about trying a class, but:

  • You’ve never taken a dance class before

  • It’s been years since you last danced

  • You’re not sure if you’ll “keep up”

  • You don’t know what to wear or bring

  • You feel a little nervous walking into something new

All of that is completely normal. You don’t need to prepare or change anything before you arrive—come as you are and we will help to guide you through the experience!

There is no “right” level of experience—just the right place to start.

What Your First Class Is Actually Like

Here’s what you can expect when you walk into your first adult dance class in Louisville at Ambo:

A welcoming environment

You won’t be the only new person in the room. Many people are starting for the first time or returning after time away.

Clear, guided instruction

Teachers walk you through each part of class and offer options so you can move at your own pace.

A mix of structure and exploration

You’ll learn movement step-by-step, with space to try things without pressure.

No pressure to “get it right”

This is about learning and experiencing movement—not being perfect.

A range of experience levels

Some people may have more experience, some less. Everyone is focused on their own process of discovering and exploring what their body can do.

What to Wear (Keep It Simple)

You don’t need special gear to start.

For your first class:

  • Wear comfortable clothes you can move in

  • Bring water

  • Check your class page for footwear (many classes allow socks or bare feet to start)

If you decide to keep coming, we’ll guide you from there.

What Happens When You Arrive

Knowing this ahead of time can make your first visit feel much easier.

  • Arrive 10–15 minutes early

  • Check in at the front desk when you enter

  • The instructor will guide you into the space

  • You can introduce yourself—or just ease in quietly

There’s no expectation to perform or already know what to do.

 It’s Okay to Feel Awkward

Trying something new—especially something physical—can feel uncomfortable at first.

That doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.

Most people:

  • Feel unsure in their first class

  • Start to feel more comfortable after a few visits

  • Build confidence over time

You don’t have to feel confident to start. â€‹Confidence comes from showing up.

Sometimes the hardest part is simply deciding to take a chance—on yourself, and on something new.

Give yourself time to adjust. Like any new skill, learning to move in a new way takes repetition, patience, and a willingness to keep coming back. Each class builds on the last, and what feels unfamiliar at first can quickly become something you look forward to.

You Don’t Have to Commit

Our adult drop-in classes are designed to be flexible.

  • No long-term commitment

  • Come when your schedule allows

  • Try different classes

  • Take breaks and return anytime

You can take one class and decide what works for you.

Ready to Take Your First Class?

You don’t need to have everything figured out. You just need to take a chance and give it a try!
